Hardcastle Crags is a beautiful National Trust site in the South Pennines with over 400 acres of unspoilt woodland.
Accessibility in Hardcastle Crags:
Hardcastle Crags is somewhat accessible site for people with disabilities. There are a number of accessible facilities available, including:
- Accessible parking: There are 2 designated parking space for disabled badge holders at Gibson Mill and a further 2 disabled parking spaces at Midgehole car park.
- Accessible toilets: There is an accessible toilet at Gibson Mill.
- Accessible paths: There are a small number of accessible paths at Hardcastle Crags, including the Estate Track Walk and the Crags Walk (Difficult with some steps).
- Accessible interpretation: There are a number of accessible interpretation boards at Hardcastle Crags.
However, there are also some areas of Hardcastle Crags that are not accessible, such as the steep path up to the top of the Crags and the top two floors of Gibson mill. If you have any mobility issues, it is important to check the accessibility information before you visit.
Here are some additional tips for visiting Hardcastle Crags if you have a disability:
- Plan your visit in advance: Disabled parking spaces need to be booked. This will help you to plan your route and make sure that you are aware of any areas that are not accessible.
- Ask for help: If you need help, do not hesitate to ask staff for assistance. They will be happy to help you find the most accessible routes and facilities.
- Take your time: There is no need to rush your visit. Take your time and enjoy the scenery at your own pace.
Facilities at Hardcastle Crags:
There are a number of facilities available at the site, including:
Toilets: There are toilets located at both the Midgehole Hole car park (Council run) and Gibson Mill. Gibson Mill toilets are composting, small and unisex.
Wifi: There is no wifi anywhere in Hardcastle crags.
Mobile: Mobile phone signals are patchy at best and not available through most of the valley.
Electric cars: There are two electric car chargers in the top car park at Midghole.
Weaving Shed Café: This café is located in Gibson Mill and serves a variety of food and drinks, including hot and cold meals, snacks, and cakes. The café is open seven days a week from April to November.
Secondhand bookshop: Inside Gibson Mill, you'll find a secondhand bookshop, which is run by our dedicated volunteers.
Walking: There are more than 15 miles of footpaths to explore through the woodland and wider countryside. The paths range from easy to challenging, so there's something for everyone.
Picnic areas: There are a number of picnic areas located throughout the woodland, so you can enjoy a packed lunch or snack while you're exploring.
Parking: There are two car parks at Hardcastle Crags: Clough Hole car park and Midgehole car park.
