Gibson mill is just one of the things you can see at Hardcastle Crags.

I have walked in the Crags almost every day for more than two decades and I see something new every week.

With over 400 acres of woodland and open grasslands with a river and streams running through it, there is an extraordinary list of things to see at Hardcastle Crags.

What you can see at Hardcastle Crags:

  • A managed woodland with over 40 native tree species,
  • Hardcastle Crags, a series of small rocky outcrops of millstone grit,
  • An extensive list of wild flowers, some of them quite rare,
  • The rivers and streams in the valley,
  • Hundreds of species of mushrooms and fungi,
  • Bryophytes, mosses, liverworts and hornworts,
  • Archaeological sites and remains,
  • An incredible variety of bird life, Including all three native woodpeckers and woodcock,
  • The insect life both in and out of the water,
  • Gibson mill.
  • The off grid and wood heating technology,
  • Slow the flow natural flood management in practice.

Having lived next to Hardcastle Crags since 1998, I have had a long time to document and photograph the area.
